SNT-TC-1A LEVEL II CERTIFICATION

The American Society for Non-Destructive Testing (ASNT) SNT-TC-1A standard is the primary certification framework for NDT technicians in the marine and industrial sectors. Level II certification qualifies technicians to:

  • Set up and calibrate NDT equipment
  • Conduct and interpret NDT examinations
  • Prepare examination reports accepted by classification societies
  • Evaluate test results against applicable codes and standards

Every OSM International NDT technician holds current SNT-TC-1A Level II certification in the methods they perform: MT (Magnetic Particle), PT (Dye Penetrant), UT (Ultrasonic), and VT (Visual Testing). Certification records are available to clients and class surveyors on request.

DOCUMENTATION

CERTIFIED INSPECTION

Sample report documentation

MT
Magnetic Particle Testing

Detection of surface and near-surface discontinuities in ferromagnetic materials. Standard method for crankshaft and connecting rod inspection.

MT IN ACTION

Certified technician performing test

PT
Dye Penetrant Testing

Detection of surface-breaking discontinuities in any non-porous material. Used for cylinder head, valve seat, and weld inspection.

PT IN ACTION

Certified technician performing test

UT
Ultrasonic Testing

Detection of internal flaws and measurement of material thickness. Phased array and conventional UT for shafts, pressure vessels, and structural components.

UT IN ACTION

Certified technician performing test

VT
Visual Testing

Systematic visual examination of surfaces and components using direct observation or optical aids including borescopes and video probes.

VT IN ACTION

Certified technician performing test

ACCEPTED BY ALL MAJOR CLASS SOCIETIES

Every inspection report produced by OSM International follows the documentation requirements of the relevant classification society or engineering standard. Our reports are routinely accepted by:

DNV
Det Norske Veritas

Reports formatted to DNV Rules for Classification requirements, accepted for class renewal and damage surveys.

Lloyd's Register
Lloyd's Register of Shipping

Documentation meets LR survey requirements for NDT inspection and dimensional reporting on classified vessels.

ABS
American Bureau of Shipping

Inspection reports aligned with ABS Rules for Building and Classing Marine Vessels survey requirements.

Bureau Veritas
Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore

Reports meet BV NR requirements for periodic survey and condition monitoring documentation.

NK / ClassNK
Nippon Kaiji Kyokai

Inspection documentation accepted by ClassNK surveyors for annual and special surveys on NK-classed vessels.

RINA
Registro Italiano Navale

NDT and dimensional reports accepted by RINA for class-required inspections across the fleet.

IACS Members
International Association of Classification Societies

All IACS member society requirements met through standardized inspection methods and documentation protocols.

HOW WE DOCUMENT EVERY REPAIR

Our quality process is designed to give vessel operators, class surveyors, and P&I clubs complete confidence in every repair.

01

Pre-Repair Inspection & Baseline Documentation

Visual, dimensional, and NDT inspection prior to any machining work. All findings recorded with measurements and photographs. Baseline condition established and agreed with vessel operator or superintendent before work proceeds.

02

In-Process Measurement & Control

Continuous dimensional measurement during machining operations using calibrated instruments. Feed and depth adjustments made in real time to maintain tolerances. Intermediate measurements recorded at defined stages of the machining process.

03

Post-Repair Inspection & NDT

Full dimensional inspection after machining completed. NDT performed as required (MT, PT, or UT) to confirm surface integrity with no relevant indications. Results recorded against OEM or class-approved specification and acceptance criteria.

04

Certified Inspection Report

Complete dimensional data, NDT results, technician certification references, equipment calibration records, and photographic documentation delivered to the client in a format suitable for submission to the classification society or P&I correspondent.

DOCUMENTATION AVAILABLE ON REQUEST

The following documentation can be provided to vessel operators, technical superintendents, classification society surveyors, and P&I club correspondents upon request:

  • Technician SNT-TC-1A Level II certificates
  • Equipment calibration certificates
  • Inspection report templates
  • Method statements (work procedures)
  • Company profile and service capability document

CERTIFICATION FAQ

What NDT certification does OSM International hold?

OSM's technicians are certified to SNT-TC-1A Level II, the ASNT standard for non-destructive testing personnel, covering visual (VT), magnetic particle (MT), dye penetrant (PT), and ultrasonic (UT) testing.

Are OSM inspection reports accepted by classification societies?

Yes. OSM's NDT and machining reports are formatted for and accepted by DNV, Lloyd's Register, ABS, Bureau Veritas, NK (ClassNK), and RINA.

What does SNT-TC-1A Level II certification mean?

SNT-TC-1A is the American Society for Nondestructive Testing (ASNT) recommended practice for qualifying and certifying NDT personnel. A Level II technician is qualified to set up and calibrate equipment, interpret and evaluate results against applicable codes and standards, and document findings in class-ready reports.

Can OSM provide certification documentation for a class survey?

Yes. We provide certification, calibration, and inspection-procedure documentation on request to support classification society surveys and insurer requirements.
