MACHINE SHOP CAPABILITY IN YOUR ENGINE ROOM

Damaged surfaces, broken studs, stripped threads, and failed component geometry on engine bedplates, manifolds, and structural elements usually mean transport to an onshore machine shop. That adds days of delay and heavy crane and haulage costs.

OSM International's portable milling and drilling systems bring that machine shop capability to the worksite. Our magnetic-base and mechanically-clamped units mill flat surfaces to ±0.05mm flatness, drill and tap threads to standard specifications, and extract broken studs without damaging the parent material.

A single broken stud or a full bedplate resurfacing: we mobilize fast across the Americas and Caribbean, cut vessel off-hire, and keep your equipment in service.

MILLING & DRILLING: ANSWERED

What is portable onsite milling?

Portable onsite milling uses magnetic-base or mechanically-clamped milling units that attach directly to the work surface (an engine bedplate, manifold face, or structural flange) and machine it flat or to a specific profile without removing the component. OSM International's systems hold flatness tolerances of ±0.05mm per 300mm and cover milling widths up to 1,200mm.

How are broken studs extracted without damaging the parent material?

OSM International combines EDM (electrical discharge machining), precision stud extractors, and controlled drilling to remove broken studs from M6 to M100. Where the thread itself is damaged, we re-tap or install thread inserts (Helicoil or similar) to restore full thread engagement and load capacity. The surrounding material stays untouched.

What thread sizes can be tapped onsite?

Our portable tapping equipment covers metric threads from M3 to M100 and imperial threads from 1/8" through 4" UNC/UNF in all standard metallic materials including carbon steel, stainless steel, duplex, Inconel, and aluminum. Blind holes, through holes, and damaged thread repair are all within scope.

Can you work on stainless steel and exotic alloys?

Yes. Our tooling inventory includes coatings and geometries optimized for stainless steel, duplex, Inconel, titanium, copper-nickel, and other exotic alloys common in marine and offshore environments. Cutting parameters are adjusted for each material to maintain dimensional accuracy and the required surface finish.

How long does an onsite milling, drilling, or stud-extraction job take?

Most milling, drilling, tapping, and stud-extraction jobs are completed in hours to a couple of days, depending on scope and access. We mobilize within 24 to 48 hours so the component is returned to service without removal or shop transport.
