When a crankshaft is damaged, there is enormous pressure to act quickly. That pressure is exactly why disciplined assessment matters: the costliest errors are made in the first hours, when the damage is not yet understood and a repair route is chosen on assumption rather than evidence.
Assessment establishes three things before any metal is removed — what has happened, how severe it is, and whether the component can be responsibly repaired. It combines visual examination, NDT, and dimensional measurement into a documented picture that everyone can review.
None of this means machining is a last resort. It means machining is the right tool once the evidence supports it. A journal restored to the wrong strategy, or a crankshaft machined past the point of responsible repair, is a far more expensive outcome than a day spent understanding the failure first.
