An out-of-round crankpin journal loads its bearing unevenly, breaks down the oil film, and accelerates both journal and bearing damage. Measuring how far the cam/oval wear has gone — and confirming the journal is still repairable in place — is the decision that protects the crankshaft and the bearing.
